Storm and Chanel Litter 2021


Chanel - 49 Days (pre-parturition)

Chanel does not appear to be slowing down, still running with the pack and getting into trouble with the rest of them. She did have a little extra winter weight, but it seems her pups have “grown” into her and she is looking good. She enjoys monitoring the perimeter of the yard for possible intruders and occasionally sounds the alarm for wild turkeys.

She has a ferocious appetite, so we have broken her meals into three daily to hopefully satisfy her. She continues to eat a very well-balanced diet of antibiotic-free proteins which are rotated daily. She’s very fond of lamb and duck lately but is also having chicken, turkey, beef and pork. Each meal has a mixture of fruits and veggies to balance her diet. Chanel’s waistline now measures 33 inches or 83.8 cm.

By day 30, digestive and respiratory glands, muscles, bones, circulatory, genital and urinary systems, the skin and hair, the nervous system and all the puppy's sensory organs--including the eyes, inner ear and peripheral nerves have formed. During weeks four to six of pregnancy, the puppy's organs, bones, eyes and spinal cord begin to fully develop. The fetus starts to look like a dog with whisker buds showing on its developing face. Claws and toes are differentiating on the feet. By week six, the puppy skin pigment is formed the puppies have all their features. At this point in their development, you can hear a heartbeat and they will grow rapidly from here on until they are born.

A Big Week for Dutch and Fiona's Puppies!

Two weeks old today! Fiona's puppies are now two weeks old, and what an exciting stage this is! Every day brings new changes as the puppies grow stronger, more aware, and even more adorable (if that’s possible). At this age, the biggest milestone is that their eyes are now open! Though their vision is still a bit blurry, they’re beginning to see the world for the first time — mostly shapes, light, and movement. Over the next week, their eyesight will continue to sharpen, and they’ll start recognizing their littermates, their mom, and of course, us humans. The puppies are also becoming more mobile. Their wobbly little legs are gaining strength as they start to scoot, crawl, and even attempt to stand. It’s amazing to watch how quickly they go from tiny, sleepy newborns to curious explorers. Dutch and Fiona’s Puppies – One Week Old Today!

Happy One Week Birthday!   Fiona’s journey into motherhood has been nothing short of remarkable. After a long and exhausting  14-hour labour , she safely delivered  12 beautiful puppies . As the final hours stretched on, both Fiona and I were completely spent. Sadly, the last few pups became our little angels due to the extended delivery time. Despite every effort — providing oxygen and stimulation — we were unable to revive them. As heartbreaking as that was, we are deeply grateful to have  nine strong, healthy puppies  now thriving under Fiona’s care. This first week has brought its share of challenges. Fiona developed  metritis , a uterine infection likely caused by the strain of her prolonged labour. She has been on antibiotics and is recovering well, but the infection initially impacted her milk production.
