Bailey, Day 54 (pre-parturition)

Baily with 9 days to go! As we head into the home stretch with only 9 days to go, our Bailey is losing her figure and the look on her face tells us she knows it! She is slowing down only slightly and prefers to lounge by the warm fire while chewing a bone. Bailey’s abdomen has expanded and is no approximately 34 inches or 86.3 cm. The puppies are growing rapidly now so we are feeding Bailey smaller, more frequent meals. She downs her food in about 4 seconds flat, so no morning sickness for this girl! This weekend, we will set up the whelping box for her to get familiar with once again. Bailey will begin to search for a den outside to have her pups in. This is instinctive so we do monitor her trips outside.  With all the snow we have, she will have to build an igloo for her pups! We are just trying to make these last eight days as comfortable and stress free as possible for Bailey. She will continue to have light activity and of course get belly rubs...

Bailey, Day 58 (pre-parturition)

Less than a week till her babies arrive! Unlike most other pregnant females, our Bailey inhales her meals. She has an appetite like we’ve never seen before and is eating four times daily. Bailey continues to blossom as her tummy has expanded to a massive 36 inches (91 cm), so she has quite a bit of extra weight to carry around! Heading into her final days of pregnancy, Bailey is pretty much just enjoying lying around and watching her fellow pack-mates frolic in the yard. The whelping area has been prepared for the big event, but our biggest challenge is monitoring Bailey’s activity outside. She has begun the hunt for a den to have her puppies in. Like many of our other moms, Bailey likes to dig under one of our spruce trees. We’re not sure why they all seem to prefer a cold, muddy hole to a comfy, warm and clean den in our bedroom. The puppies can be safely born anytime now, but Bailey typically goes full term which is 63 days from the time of ovulation. It is easy to feel the pupp...

Bailey, Day 56 (pre-parturition)

Bailey with just one week to go till the big event! The final countdown before Bailey has her pups has begun! Bailey is now surveying the yard for the perfect place to have her babies. We still have about a foot of snow but with her persistent excavation, she has managed to dig so far down she has found dirt beneath it! When we called her to come in, she had mud up to her elbows! Needless to say, a footbath was required.  This week, we set the whelping box up for her and we will put down fresh towels and allow her to sleep and lounge in it. We’re hoping she’ll soon abandon her quest to find her own spot and embrace the warm, clean nest we’ve prepared for her. Bailey continues to have a voracious appetite. We are feeding her three smaller meals daily and it seems if we were to offer her more, she would eat it. Bailey had been doing well throughout her pregnancy and is finally showing signs of slowing down. Her tummy now measures 33.5 inches (90 cm.)   A Golden Retriever p...
