Such a beauty. “The Final Countdown” As Skye heads into her final week of pregnancy, she is very much focused on finding the perfect den in our backyard to have her puppies. This morning she dug a hole that she can pretty much fit herself into along with Pepper, her partner in crime! It is her natural instinct to find and prepare a den to birth her puppies however, she’ll actually have them in a nice warm and sterile environment known as the whelping box. We keep puppies in our bedroom for the first 3 weeks and over the next week we will make all the final preparations for their arrival.  Skye is still extremely interested in food and will almost take your hand off when offered a treat. She inhales her food in about 4 seconds flat and is now receiving 3 meals daily, but we may increase that to 4 or 5 meals as we move closer to her whelping date. Our beautiful Heidi As we head into the final days of Heidi’s pregnancy, we are certainly seeing her slow down. She is spending most of her time lounging on our back deck and just watching the other dogs frolic and play. When she does venture out, Heidi has been wandering our yard seeking a den in which to whelp her puppies and it would appear that she has excavated a 2’ x 2’ foot hole under the spruce tree. This week we will introduce her to a pristinely clean whelping box in the hope that she will find this acceptable for her pups. Heidi is shedding the hair on her belly in preparation for the birth and we can actually feel the puppies moving at this time. Bailey with just one week to go till the big event! The final countdown before Bailey has her pups has begun! Bailey is now surveying the yard for the perfect place to have her babies. We still have about a foot of snow but with her persistent excavation, she has managed to dig so far down she has found dirt beneath it! When we called her to come in, she had mud up to her elbows! Needless to say, a footbath was required.  This week, we set the whelping box up for her and we will put down fresh towels and allow her to sleep and lounge in it. We’re hoping she’ll soon abandon her quest to find her own spot and embrace the warm, clean nest we’ve prepared for her. Bailey continues to have a voracious appetite. We are feeding her three smaller meals daily and it seems if we were to offer her more, she would eat it.
