Our sweet pups are officially two weeks old and doing incredibly well! Everyone is tipping the scales at over 3 lbs and gaining beautifully.
Big changes this week:
Their eyes opened mid-week, which is always such a magical milestone.
We’re still weighing them twice a day, but that will soon shift to once daily, and eventually to weekly checks once they start solid food.
By mid to late next week, we’ll begin introducing the puppies to solid food for the first time. Their first meals will include a nutritious blend of ground turkey with bone, organ meats, goat’s milk, and pre- and probiotics.
It’s always a comical and heartwarming moment—they tend to walk right into the food bowl, get completely covered, and more often than not, fall asleep mid-meal right in the dish! Their first few feedings usually end with a much-needed bath.
Mani-Pedis All Around!
Olivia’s puppies have been getting their nails trimmed every 5 days, starting within the first 24 hours after birth. Regular nail care is important—not just to protect Olivia from getting scratched while nursing, but also to prevent the pups from accidentally scratching each other as they grow and play.
It’s also an early form of training, helping them get used to regular handling and grooming for when they head off to their forever homes.
For reference, even our resident adult dogs have their nails trimmed weekly—it’s all part of keeping them healthy and comfortable!
If you’ve been watching them on the 24/7 puppy cam, you’ve probably noticed they’re still sleeping about 90% of the day. That’s perfectly normal! This deep rest is called activated sleep, and it plays an important role in helping develop the muscles they’ll soon use for walking and playing. You may have already spotted a few starting to wobble around!
As they become more mobile, we’ll expand their space to give them more room to explore and interact.
What’s that pipe behind Olivia?
That’s called a pig rail—a safety feature in the whelping box that keeps pups safe if they wander behind mom. It’s raised a few inches around the edge to prevent Olivia from accidentally lying on a pup. As of this morning, we’ve adjusted it higher to keep up with how quickly these little ones are growing!
We’re excited to share this journey with you as the pups become more curious and playful in the coming weeks!
