Sweet Miss Chardonnay |
“Where there’s
trouble…there’s Chardonnay”
That’s
a statement that may well ring true in real life too. In this instance,
it’s used endearingly to describe the latest antics of Bailey’s brood. And yes,
Miss Chardonnay was up to her old tricks again. Each week we add a slat to the
door of the whelping box to increase the height of the enclosure. Each week,
Miss Chardonnay undermines the level of our security. Yesterday, we found she
had escaped the confines of the whelping box and was standing in front of the
patio door ready to lead the charge outside. Their outdoor time is great fun,
especially since this lot runs with Mango’s gang. Each morning all ten pups
chant at the top of their lungs to command us to let them out. Once outside, Miss
Champagne can typically be found tied up in some kind of extreme exploration in
the far reaches of the yard or engaged in a tussle with one of her siblings in
a sand pile. Mr. Merlot makes the rounds with each and every sibling and
playmate or gets involved in some manner of conference or brawl. The puppies
all enjoy playing in a crate and a doghouse that are set up in the yard and
usually take turns having a nap inside one or the other.
The
gang welcomed visitors over the weekend and expressed their delight by chewing
on watches, fingers, shoelaces or anything else within easy reach to aid in
their teething. They enjoyed all of the attention, hammed it up for their
guests and pretended to be sweet so that they’d be picked up and cuddled. All
that fun tired everyone out so not only was Mr. Merlot snoring as he slept, but
he did so with his foot in the water bowl resembling a patron at a salon
soaking their nails for a pedicure.
The
puppies’ appetite for exploration is rivalled only by their appetite for food.
They’re eating well, much to their mom’s chagrin, since there are rarely any
left-overs for her. Everyone is gaining well and they all have the waistlines
to prove it. Their muzzles are lengthening and are beginning to look a bit more
like the adults they will eventually become. Their emotions are becoming
apparent too, so they whine to show fear, whimper if they’re hurt and bark when
they are excited or want attention. The kids sure are growing up. With the nice
weather on the weekend, they were able to spend their time doing what puppies
love to do: just groovin’ on a Sunday
afternoon.
That’s it for now, but be sure to join us next week for
another captivating installment of “Puppy Tales”.
