Mango and Steele Puppies – born July 9, 2012
Mr. Blackberry in dreamland! |
While
Mango's puppies arrived almost effortlessly in one of those rare, albeit
cherished daytime deliveries, they are certainly demonstrating that they’re
ready to take on the world.
The
puppies cannot see or hear yet, but their sense of smell guides them in the
right direction to their newly established, favourite hang-out: the milk bar. They meet there frequently
as it’s open 24 hours a day and the meals are complimentary. Whenever Mango
returns to the whelping box from a bathroom break or from a stroll to stretch
her legs, she is greeted by seven whining puppies, anxiously waiting for their
next meal to arrive.
Many
of the pups are approaching 2 lbs. in weight with the exception of Mr.
Tangerine. He’s a bit smaller than the other boys but he sure has a great
spirit and is determined to keep his spot on the milk bar despite all the
jostling that goes on there. He’s usually the first one there and often the
last one off. Sometimes he falls asleep right at the “dinner table” and flops
over, gently panting with a bulging waistline. At the rate he’s going, he’ll be caught up to the others in
no time.
Mango
is an outstanding mom, in fact the June Cleaver of all mothers. She is entirely
devoted to her puppies and chooses to spend most of her time in the whelping
box with them, day and night. When it’s time to change the linen, usually
several times a day, she watches very intently and whimpers a little to urge us
on to speed up her return to her little family.
Mango
had an upset tummy in the early part of the week but we fed her rice and ground
beef as it is easy on her digestive system. It’s important to maintain a high
carbohydrate diet for milk production. We knew she had turned the corner when
on one of her breaks, she laid claim to her favourite ball. We’re certain she
would take it into the whelping box with her if she could.
That’s it for now, but be sure to join us next week for another
riveting installment of “Puppy Tales”.
