“World Cup Soccer in Caledon”
The puppies
vacillate between two extremes. On the one hand, they were the best behaved,
quietest group on record during their car ride to visit Dr. Matt, the
veterinarian. Each and every puppy was very brave, not to mention polite and
received top marks for their checkup. They also received kudos in the parking
lot at Ren’s Pet Depot where admiring passersby cooed with delight at the sight
of these little balls of fur. On the other hand, this group doesn’t hold
anything back when it’s time to unwind and have fun. In a recent World Cup
Puppy Soccer match, it was one giant free-for-all wherein the puppies ran
shrieking as they chased the ball from one end of the foyer to the other and
back again. Afterward, when the water bowls were drained by the thirsty brood,
two of their brethren picked up the bowls and ran victory laps with them.
One of the more
perplexing things we’ve noticed is that when the puppies are playing in the
foyer and a ball or toy drops “way down” into the 5” sunken area, they come to an
abrupt halt on the edge of the step as if they’ve just encountered some great
chasm. When the rest of the group was otherwise occupied, only Mr. Ebony and
one or two others have ever dared to venture down to investigate this strange
new world.
Despite the
reappearance of winter, the puppies were fortunate to have a few breaks to be
able to venture outside. While they were initially apprehensive about some
ground cover we know as grass, the little ones needed no second invitation to
quickly discover the thrill of rock climbing and twig gathering. (It’s
interesting that they’ll climb up a 24” pile of rocks, but hesitate to conquer
a 5” step!) The puppies’ senses were heightened as they took in every sight and
sound; their confidence growing as they explored in ever-widening circles.
When the gang
isn’t engaged in some form of play or eating or sleeping, these animated little
minions love to surround us on the floor of the foyer to seize an opportunity
for a cuddle. They bounce up like little jacks-in-the-box to plant a kiss on
our faces or crawl around on our legs or in our laps, eager to be caressed. Their
temperament testing revealed a very well-balanced, affectionate gang that is
willing to make friends with anyone. We often see three of them squeezed together,
snuggling in a small crate. In an encounter with our Hungarian born Bailey, the
puppies went to great lengths to make her feel welcome, but not before they examined
her undercarriage thoroughly to see if she was making a milk delivery or not.
Whether animal or human, this gang is more than willing to share their precious
love.
That’s it for now, but be sure to join us next week
for the mesmerizing conclusion of “Puppy Tales”.
