Heidi and Hudson’s Litter – Week Six

The Escape Artist - Miss Scarlet

“A Little Privacy Please!”

Puppies have no sense of discretion. They just want to have fun -  even if it’s at the expense of one of their siblings. Feeling what some might refer to as one of nature’s calls, one of the pack will slip away to a quiet spot to have a private moment. No sooner has the” target” surrendered to his urges when out of nowhere, one or two other puppies converge to take down their “quarry” in a game of rugby without the ball.

Another one of the most dramatic sports moments of the week occurred as we rolled a big ball out into the play area. The puppies were mesmerized as they took in the sight of this wondrous red object spinning past them. One by one, they went to investigate until Mr. Ebony, realizing its great power, began to roll it around the floor. The rest of the gang jubilantly followed the procession as if they’d just invented the wheel.

We’re sure the Olympic Committee didn’t see this coming: we’ve had to rewrite some of the rules of the sport of (puppy) wrestling because some of the gang don’t have it quite right. Two puppies will engage in a bout and after a period of time, they both simply lie down on their backs. I guess in this version, everyone’s a winner. For some reason unbeknownst to us, this group seems to spend a lot of time on their backs whether awake or asleep.

There’s one in every litter and this time it’s Miss Scarlet – the escape artist. Time after time, she’s been intercepted on the other side of a barrier, making her way down a hallway or in the far reaches of a room that was yet to be explored. Early one morning, she was apprehended in the library with two of her cohorts who had all scaled the slat wall entrance to the whelping box in a daring night escape. They didn’t venture very far as we found them curled up together on the carpet outside their shelter. It’s obvious that security needs to be stepped up.

Heidi’s role as mom has evolved from primary caregiver to one of a sentinel as she sleeps on the sofa in the library and keeps a silent vigil on her flourishing brood. The puppies are at the age now where interaction with people is becoming increasingly important to them. They are already establishing relationships in their journey right up to the ones that they will form with their forever families and beyond. And in true Golden fashion, they’re good at that!

That’s it for now, but be sure to join us next week for another titillating installment of “Puppy Tales”.

Storm & Tulip Puppies – Day One

They're Here! What a day it was! Tulip didn't skip a beat yesterday. She enjoyed breakfast, lunch, and dinner as if it were any other day... and then, at 6:30 p.m., she calmly welcomed her first puppy into the world. Making a grand entrance was  Mr. Rocky Road  (brown collar). Not long afterward,  Mr. Maple Walnut  (beige collar) arrived, and that's when things started to get a little more exciting! Our third arrival,  Mr. Pistachio  (green collar), decided the backyard lawn was the perfect place to make his debut while Tulip and I were out for an evening walk. Thankfully, I always carry a towel with me when we're close to whelping. I scooped up our newest little traveler, and Tulip and I made a speedy dash back to the house. The surprises didn't stop there!  Miss Vanilla  (white collar) made her entrance on the bedroom carpet while I was letting Tulip outside for a quick bathroom break. Shortly afterward,  Mr. Moose Tracks  (blac...

A Big Week for Dutch and Fiona's Puppies!

Two weeks old today! Fiona's puppies are now two weeks old, and what an exciting stage this is! Every day brings new changes as the puppies grow stronger, more aware, and even more adorable (if that’s possible). At this age, the biggest milestone is that their eyes are now open! Though their vision is still a bit blurry, they’re beginning to see the world for the first time — mostly shapes, light, and movement. Over the next week, their eyesight will continue to sharpen, and they’ll start recognizing their littermates, their mom, and of course, us humans. The puppies are also becoming more mobile. Their wobbly little legs are gaining strength as they start to scoot, crawl, and even attempt to stand. It’s amazing to watch how quickly they go from tiny, sleepy newborns to curious explorers. Fiona is doing a wonderful job keeping everyone clean, warm, and fed. Although she doesn't have the milk supply we hoped for, we are supplementing by bottle feeding at least once daily.  The p...
